The division could see speeds reduced
SUPER GT chairman Masaaki Bandoh has suggested that the cornering speeds of GT300-spec cars will be pegged back as part of the series’ Balance of Performance system in the future.
The lower division of SUPER GT is unique as it pits FIA GT3 cars against vehicles built around the series’ own chassis and GT300 rules, creating a three-way divide in the class.
As a result this makes the task of creating a level-playing field much more difficult, with championship promoter GTA working alongside Stephane Ratel Organisation to balance a wide variety of cars.
As with other GT racing series, BoP has been a major point of debate in SUPER GT, with some arguing that GT300 cars have been enjoying an unfair advantage over the rest of the grid in recent times.
This follows Subaru becoming the first manufacturer to win a title with a GT300 car in five years in 2021, when it introduced a new generation BRZ model based on the road car of the same name.
Bandoh said SUPER GT would look at ways to reduce any potential disparities on the grid targeting a reduction in cornering speeds of GT300-spec cars.
Bandoh said that SUPER GT will continue to assess the performance of cars based on qualifying, as a number of factors skew the true pecking order in the race.
Despite Subaru being unbeatable in qualifying so far in 2022, both Okayama and Fuji races were won by Nissan GT3 cars.
