BMW starts testing hydrogen-fuelled X5s

BMW has begun testing prototypes of the ‘i Hydrogen NEXT’. This will effectively be a hydrogen-fuelled X5. The X5s will be tested in Europe under “real-life conditions” as BMW gears up to eventually put a FCEV on sale, perhaps as early as 2025.

The i Hydrogen NEXT uses fuel cells developed together with Toyota and can carry six kilos of hydrogen in twin CFRP tanks. The fuel cell and “performance buffer battery” produce a combined 369bhp.

Frank Weber, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Development, says: “Hydrogen fuel cell technology can be an attractive option for sustainable drive trains – especially in larger vehicle classes. That is why road testing of near-standard vehicles with a hydrogen fuel cell drive train is an important milestone in our research and development efforts.”

Can you bend silicone hoses?

Silicone hoses are far superior to the rubber alternatives, but what if you need a hose to bend into non standard shapes?

You may ask yourself whether you can bend silicone hoses yourself. There are many videos online telling you to heat the silicone with a heat gun. This is not something we would ever recommend. As well as being dangerous, you have the potential to ruin the pipe. If you go to fast or don’t heat the pipe evenly you get kinks which will damage the hose.

So what’s the answer?

We have specially developed two options to solve this problem which mean no more DIY silicone hose bending.

If you are looking for a really tight bend radius then take a look at UltraFlex. We discussed the benefits of these pipes In our recent blog. These pipes offer fantastic flexibility with incredibly tight bend radius using a wire spiral inside a specially convoluted section to create an extremely flexible hose connection. Find out more.

Or for smaller pipes we also have our Superflex Silicone Hoses. These are manufactured with a steel wire spiral embedded inside the reinforcement plies, allowing for flexibility not possible with most standard straight hoses. It will also take higher pressures compared to standard silicone hoses. Find out more

Large Range of Aluminium Elbows

Aluminium elbows, fuel hose fittingAluminium Elbows are ideal for joining silicone hoses together to make bespoke systems. Viper Performance Aluminium Hose Joiners are designed to fit perfectly with any universal silicone hose. Available in sizes from 15° to 180°.

Quality is paramount with all of our products. Our mandrel bent aluminium elbows have the tightest bend radius on the market. Most of the mandrel bends are 1.2D. They come Mirror polished, which means no coating for welding and have roll beaded ends for best hose retention. Delivered to you  with a clean finish ready to use protected with bubble wrap whilst in our warehouse and during delivery.

You can see the full range of aluminium elbows here.

Special Elbows Available:

As well as our standard elbows we also have some special hard to find elbows.

Super Long 90 elbow

This elbow has super long legs. Our standard elbows have 152mm legs but if you need longer these super long elbows have 300mm legs. Find out more here.

L shape elbow

A really unique product is our L shaped elbow. With one long leg 500mm and another at the standard 150mm. Find out more here.

Looking for fantastic flexibility with incredibly tight bend radius? Introducing UltraFlex

ultraflex silicone hose rubber hosesOur UltraFlex silicone hoses offer fantastic flexibility with incredibly tight bend radius not at all possible with any Superflex silicone hoses or standard lengths.

The hoses feature a wire spiral inside with specially convoluted sections to create an extremely flexible hose connection not possible with other hoses. They are lightweight and are hand made in silicone and reinforced with polyester fabric.  Boasting a Temperature rating of -40°c to +180°c peak.

Difference between working pressure and burst pressure of silicone hoses

When looking at any type of hose you will come across pressure data. You may have seen the terms ‘working pressure’ and ‘burst pressure’ amongst these. So what are they and how do they differ?

The working pressure means the pressure of the pipe fittings or flanges in the working conditions range, normally called pressure range.

The burst pressure is the maximum pressure that can be applied to the pipeline components without physical damage. Burst pressure can be defined as the maximum pressure this pipe fitting can withstand before breaking. When the pressure exceeds the burst pressure, the pipe will explode.

So what are the burst pressures of silicone hoses?

We have a technical area on our website which houses tables showing the burst pressure data for all different sizes of hose. You can find it here. https://www.viperperformance.co.uk/page-burst-pressure-thickness.html

Straight Reducing Diameter Silicone Hoses starting at just £4.99

straight reducing silicone hose aluminium tubeWe have the worlds largest range of straight reducers with 70 size options currently available and new sizes being added all the time.

These reducers suit just about any application and industry with the smallest diameters suitable for water connections and the bigger sizes which are great for intercoolers, air intakes or other industries just as marine.

We build all hoses with minimum 3 layers of reinforcement plus 1mm inner liner for added protection. These are the highest quality hand made hoses, lined and multi-layered with quality fabric reinforcements.

Most straight reducers are 100mm long. All diameters are internal, it is imperative you choose the correct size for your application.

See the full range of straight reducing diameters here.

Silicone hoses for high temperatures

reinforcement fabrics bespoke tubingSilicone hoses are not all the same and ensuring that the hose is of high quality will determine its effectiveness and life span. All silicone hoses have an inner liner and a minimum of 3 layers of fabric reinforcement.

Our standard polyester reinforcements are perfect for any applications where temperature will not exceed 170°C. There are some applications which will require hoses to withstand high temperatures. In this case we offer different types of reinforcements.

Polyester reinforcements 170°C

Our standard fabric is made from 100% polyester which is specially designed for pressure, strength and flexibility. This reinforcement suits most engine applications. Working temperatures are from -50℃ to +170℃, peaking at +180℃ Polyester reinforced hoses are however NOT suitable for carrying oil or fuel.

Polyester is Ideal for:

  • Water
  • Air
  • Air intakes
  • Coolant
  • Small amounts of oil mist

Nomex reinforcements 220°C

When you require a higher temperature rating we have another fabric option called Nomex. The pattern of this fabric is different, we use a knitted Nomex fabric. Our Nomex reinforced hoses will withstand high temperatures up to 220°C making them ideal for Turbo application, hot air, steam, water or environments where other hoses fail.

Nomex is Ideal for:

  • Water
  • Air
  • Coolants
  • Turbo boost
  • High temperatures
  • Higher pressures
  • Small amounts of oil mist.

FLURO LINED HOSES

For hoses which will be in contact with oil we have another liner option called Fluro Liner. This is a highly specialised product which is Ideal for contact with Oils / Oil mists and fuel Filler hoses. The Working temperatures of these hoses is from -50℃ to +170℃

Fluro ideal for:

  • Water
  • Air
  • OIL in ASTM 1 and 3 oil mists
  • transfer of fuel (fuel filler hose)  (not suitable for high octane fuels)

To select one of the above options when buying your hoses simply check the correct build material at the top of the page before adding your hose to the cart. View all silicone hoses here.
